January 2019
Welcome to a new semester of Pharmacology! Although we have only been back in class for less than a month now, we have already completed our Endocrine + Reproduction block and are half way through our Neurology block. Its crazy how incredibly fast the time has flown, but looking back, we have covered so much since last August! Next month will actually wrap up our entire med pharm class which makes up the bulk of our material. To finish off med pharm, we will be taking our NBME exam in late March. Many people are starting to prepare for this big exam now, including myself!
Some interesting changes from last semester to this semester include 3 journal club classes: Environmental Signaling, Neuropharmacology, and Endocrine Pharmacology. These classes have been really nice so far. It has been very enjoyable to learn new material without the daunting feeling of an exam to follow. Our journal club classes also give us an opportunity to work closely with faculty, hear our classmates present material, and work with others in our class who we may not have otherwise. I think these journal club type classes will be extremely beneficial for everyone who interviews for graduate/medical/dental school as well because it allows you to practice speaking in front of others and answering sometimes challenging questions. I look forward to what more these classes will bring.
This semester I was also able to start back up with my volunteer work as an assistant coach at Girls on the Run. This semester I am at a different site with a new set of girls! This change has been really great, and it has allowed me to work more closely with Hannah, Nicole, and Megan. So far this semester we have covered positive thinking and what makes us unique; getting to know the new team of girls has been really fun, and everyone has been very welcoming.
By the next blog posting, we will have covered everything med pharm has to offer and will be well on our way to the NBME. Until next time!
